Candy Dreams FROM Microgaming

Just as springtime gives way to the warmth of summer, so to does Microgaming offer yet another blooming flower for the world to admire. This time around, it is a 5-reel 720-ways to win slot released in May 2017. As the title implies, it’s all about candies this time around, and carrying off as many as you can get away with! You’ll find a very passable game here, as it offers two casual bonuses, a paytable that skirts the low paying side, and so many sweets that it’ll make your teeth rot.

HOW TO PLAY

It’s not that the slot looks bad, but it feels underwhelming, in a sense. It’s simplistic, but the lack of music in the game is immediately obvious. The animations are next to non-existent, the background is static, and the icons are admittedly somewhat boring, but with so many ways to draw candy, we didn’t expect flat to be an option. Again, it doesn’t look bad, but it fails to impress as well.

As for gameplay, it is a relatively simple affair. Give it a spin, and hope the right number of combinations pop up, and pray you get a special feature. It plays like a medium variance slot, but the paytable’s more on the lower side of things, which means you will want to activate one of the two bonuses Candy Dreams offers, which will take a bit of luck on your part. Both are triggered by Scatters, so on top of getting three Scatters on the reels at the same time, you will also have to hope they’re the right- three Scatters.

BETTING OPTIONS AND PAYOUTS

Despite the large number of paylines, wins can be surprisingly absent for a long time. This means, if you’re hoping for scores during regular gameplay, you sit down and hope some Wilds appear, or some luck comes your way. But even if that is the case, you will probably want luck to send you one of the two special features rather than a win, as they tend to be a lot more profitable.

Playable for $0.50 up to $250, it gives a wide range of betting options to gamblers from both sides of the equation, if $0.50 might just be a bit too high for players in less developed countries. You can adjust it by selecting your coin size and amount of coin per bet line. Ultimately, it may turn out for best if you don’t sink too much money into the game, and play on the lower end of the betting lines, as it doesn’t really scale up well in the long term.

SYMBOLS AND EXTRA FEATURES

Despite looking a little flat, the candies do have a decent variety to them, with shapes and colours that differ for each one. The medium paying ones have the same colour, but a different shape, and seem a bit less pressed down compared to the lower paying treats. Candy Dreams has two bonuses that players can activate, both of which are triggered with a different Scatter.

The first one is the Candy Planet, in which gamblers will pick a number of pink orbs and crack them open for a cash prize inside. The special feature ends when you choose the Pop! Icon, but you can add yourself an extra life if you come across a heart while playing. The other bonus has a different Scatter that activates it, and awards 12 free spins. While this is active, a yellow gift can appear in the middle of the reels, and make a number of Wilds appear on the playing field. Both Scatters grant the player 100x their wager for a five of a kind win, but it drops to a just 1x increase for a three of a kind, so some of the sweetness of this particular treat is lost.

OUR VERDICT

We’re not that impressed with Candy Dreams. Average is really a good word to describe it. The visuals feel like a let down compared to other recent releases, the gameplay can be tedious and relies on special features a bit too much, and the paytable sits on the lower paying side. It feels like they pushed something out the door just to show that they did while working on the next big thing. Overall, there are better places to spend your money on, so we can’t recommend Microgaming’s newest slot.
